Criminal Psychology - Vital Part of Legal Structures

Crime in it many forms has been a scourge of human society ever since mankind recognized that all of the people living in the world are not equally endowed with the same materialistic objects nor mental and physical abilities. You can see many crimes being committed by various criminals and for a variety of reasons across the world. Even though these reasons are mostly for some sort of gain or retribution, the real causes for the crimes and the mind set of criminals (generally as well as under certain emotional triggers) forms and requires detailed study and research. All of such kinds of study plus how an understanding of the human mind can reduce crime come under a branch of psychology that is called criminal psychology.

A trained and well experienced criminal psychologist who also has an understanding of the criminal mind will be able to try and arrive at the various facts that make different people commit crimes. With the help of criminal psychology, a psychological profile of a criminal can be formulated, which will help the law enforcers and investigative forces anticipate the criminals’ next act and sometimes even their next target. Such an investigative analysis will greatly assist the police in ending any type of crime spree.

Given the insight and knowledge about human behavior that well trained psychologists will possess, it will be possible for them to comprehend what drives criminals along with their behavioral patterns and overall objectives. Furthermore, this criminal’s profile that the psychologists will be able to draw can be used by the police to decide on how to preempt the criminal and where to lay a trap for the criminal.

In some cases, many people can get hurt by criminal acts. If the police are able to figure out how to capture the criminal without infringing on any of the rights of the person, the damage that can be done to people and property by such criminal acts can be avoided or at least minimized. With the help of criminal psychology, the police may be able to do just that, and save many people from getting injured.

You should realize that like other types of psychology, criminal psychology too needs to be constantly updated in view of the changing human behavior. Now, after a person has been apprehended, a report of the person’s criminal profile will have to be written by a criminal psychologist. This report forms a part of the overall investigative report, and can be used to explain why these specific methods were adopted to catch the criminal. Once the criminal is questioned and formally charged with crimes, the criminal psychology theory behind the capture is evaluated for any misconceived objectives and faulty approaches. Such an evaluation of the criminal psychology that was used during a crime will serve both the psychologist and the police to analyze and improve on their methods on a continuous basis. As various crimes are being committed at all times, the need for a sound criminal psychology framework is exemplified.

Thus, criminal psychology forms an important part of the legal systems across all societies.
