The Emerging Field of Color Psychology

May 19, 2007 by kkunchi

Psychology is the study of human behavior in various situations and under different stimuli. Human responses and behavior under a particular situation have been attributes to several factors; one such factor is color. The study of how different colors spark off different reactions in human beings is color psychology. It is to be noted that certain of the currently practicing psychologists do downplay the effect of color in our behavioral patterns. However, there are many color psychologists who strongly believe differently.

Color psychologists scientifically study and research the responses of different individuals towards various colors. Now at this point, you should note that the interpretation and practice of color psychology varies from region to region, and there also is historical proof that suggests that certain of the early cultures did use color psychology. The ancient Egyptians, Chinese and Indians did use colors in treating an individual or practiced chromotherapy as it is also called.

Instances of a particular color that brings about different reactions in people can be witnessed in color psychology. Commonly known colors, such as red, are known to cause evidenced reactions among people. While some people consider the color red as being lively and stimulating, some others regard red as being overwhelming and bringing about a disconcerting feeling in different people. Another prominent color that can be found in color psychology is black. Color psychologists regard that wearing black conveys an acceptance of dominance by other forces, such as that exemplified by priests in the Christian faith who are believed to wear black robes so as to willingly accept the dominance of God or show submission before God. On the other hand, you can also find many people who believe that wearing black brings about a sophisticated look.

Like in the examples of color psychology listed, you might also experience certain behavioral traits and emotional states when you are inside rooms or places that have been treated with a certain color. Such behavioral changes or responses that are believed to have been brought about by color forms a major part of the treatments administered to people. Color psychologists may also be able to arrive at the expected reactions of certain patients when exposed to various colors.

Now you must know that color psychology is as yet an emerging field of study and you might not find sufficient documented test results to go by while treating a person. At the current juncture, the only pointers of color psychology are some of the common colors that people are definitely aware of. Our responses to numerous other shades and hues are yet to be uncovered. And, as the study of color psychology advances, you will be able to correlate more and more between certain colors and their effect on our behavioral patterns.
